Relationships

Her moon family

Rayla loses a family and builds another. These are the bonds that break her, mend her, and ultimately make her whole.

Callum — partner

Enemies to friends to lovers, and the emotional spine of the series. She first sees Callum as nothing but a human enemy, then is amazed when he casts magic. She defends him before Sol Regem as "noble and true," calls him her best friend, and falls in love. He calls her "strong, fast, and beautiful… the most amazing person I've ever met."

Tiadrin & Lain — parents

Dragonguard warriors Rayla wrongly believed were deserters; her shame about them drives her entire early arc. In truth they stayed and fell defending the egg. Imprisoned in Viren's coins, they are freed by Rayla in Book Six — and choose to pass on, at peace at last.

Runaan — adoptive father & mentor

Her stern teacher, to whom she is "like a daughter." He tries to kill her for defying the mission in Book One — yet she never stops loving him. Given the choice in Book Six, she revives Runaan, opening the door to his redemption.

Ethari — adoptive father

The gentle craftsman who raised her and disapproved of her assassin training. Forced to "ghost" her when she was banished, he ultimately forgives her and helps her.

Ezran — little-brother figure

Once one of her assassination targets, Ezran becomes family. She declares he was "worth losing a hand over."

Others

  • Zym — the baby Dragon Prince she guards; protective, sibling-like.
  • Soren — a former enemy turned genuine friend.
  • Stella — her Cuddlemonkey companion from Book Four onward.
  • Amaya — the human general who sees her own younger self in Rayla.
